Oct. 10, 2016 – The teaching theater erupted with cheer and applause by Campbell MS staff when the announcement was made that they were being adopted by Westway Baptist Church on Friday, Oct. 7.

“I am pleased and feel blessed to have Westway Baptist Church adopt Campbell Middle School,” said Campbell principal Laura Perry. “The support from the church leadership team and their congregation will make a huge difference in our ability to help our Campbell scholars continue to strive for excellence.”

CFISD’s Adopt-a-School program pairs schools with community and business partners to utilize the resources of the community to help strengthen and enrich the quality of education for students.

The adoption was made official with WBC youth pastor Jesse Hammonds and principal Perry both signing an Adopt-a-School Agreement at the ceremony, arranged by Leslie Francis, CFISD director of marketing and business relations.

Hammonds said that as a current substitute in CFISD [and at Campbell MS], he began to see the extensive amount of help that schools need and realized that schools cannot do it alone.

“I believe in order for a community to be at its best, it’s going to take the community to provide that help,” he said. “If I am going to be here [subbing], I will make it a point to do something meaningful and impactful that will reach our students.”

According to WBC senior pastor David Barrett, his church will be working closely with the community engagement office to establish the next steps for his church’s partnership with Campbell MS.

“This is a brand new thing for us, we never thought about partnering with a school. We look around the neighborhood and we want to be a church that’s neighborhood oriented. This is just one way we can do that,” Barrett said. “We’ve learned that there are many kids that have such a difficult time—especially with so many one-parent homes and low incomes—and we know that there has to be a way that the community can come together and work together regardless of who you are.”

Perry said she is excited about this partnership because it will show our scholars that citizens in their own community are sincerely interested in their achievements and invested in their future.

“Thank you, Westway Baptist Church, for assisting the Campbell staff with our mission: Campbell Gators are SCHOLARS! Our mission is to produce GRADUATES!”
