HISTORY

Campbell Middle School is named after Mr. and Mrs. LWA “Bud” Campbell, a couple who dedicated their lives to service.

Leslie Wulf Arthur "Bud" Campbell was born on December 10, 1919 in Ida Grove, Iowa. He attended Iowa State University, then served as a Staff Sgt. in the 87th Infantry Division in the European Theatre during World War II. Phyllis Carolyn "Corky" Campbell, was born on November 7, 1920 in Savanna, IL. Upon graduating from Drake University in 1940, she taught kindergarten for one year and then married the love of her life, Leslie Wulf Arthur "Bud" Campbell. Corky and Bud were married for sixty years. Together they had five children: Becky Rhodes, Jill Veatch, Sue Medford, Teddy Campbell and Scot Campbell. Continuing the Campbell legacy are eight grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and one great-great grandson.

During his 27-year career with Tenneco, Bud served as Chief Engineer of Tennessee Gas Pipeline in the late 50's; coordinated the construction of the Tenneco Building in the early 60's; then became President of Tennessee Gas Pipeline Co. Prior to his retirement in 1973, he was Executive Vice-President of Tennessee Gas Transmission Co. He remained involved in the oil and gas industry by serving on the Board of Directors for both Camco, Inc. and CECO Corporation.

Bud and Corky moved to the Cy-Fair area in 1956 and her days were filled with caring for her five children, volunteering with the TB Association, driving patients for treatment at MD Anderson, teaching Sunday school at Windwood Presbyterian Church and serving as a Girl Scout leader. In 1960, Corky became the first PTO president of Post Elementary. Bud was also dedicated to community service. He was a Peewee League coach and scout leader and he served terms as Vice-President and President of the Cy-Fair ISD School Board. During his tenure, the district grew from 4,327 students to 16,496 students. Bud was a charter member of the Cypress-Fairbanks Educational Foundation and served on the Foundation Board for seven years. He volunteered as an Associate Presbyter of the New Covenant Presbytery as a "Dollar a Year Man". Bud was an elder at Windwood Presbyterian Church. No doubt the greatest honor bestowed upon Bud and Corky was the dedication of Campbell Middle School in their name, the fourth middle school in CFISD, which opened in 1978.

In 1978, Corky and Bud moved to NM, where they had the time of their lives. They enjoyed volunteering at a hospital and food bank in Santa Fe and loved picnicking, identifying flowers and photographing wildlife in the Jemez Mts. They were affiliate members of First Presbyterian Church in Santa Fe, NM.

Mr. Campbell passed away at the age of 82 on March 3, 2002, after a long illness. And Corky passed away at the age of 94 on December 13, 2014 in Tomball, TX.

They will be remembered for their great love of life and family and their generous spirits and all of Cypress Fairbanks ISD appreciates their service.
